Self care as a trend is on the rise. An Instagram search of the hashtag “selfcare” generated 7.9 Million posts as of the date of this blog. I really enjoy learning about how others do their self care routines, so I thought I would share mine with you.
My favorite way to pamper myself is getting my nails professionally done. I just find it so relaxing. The nail salon I go to has a Starbucks nearby so I go there first to get a drink, usually a Passion Iced Tea, then I treat myself to a manicure and pedicure. Usually I can do my nails on my own but it’s a nice treat to be waited on and not have to think. On days when I can’t do that, something as simple as a face mask is a quick way to unwind. Once you have this on, you’re not going anywhere! So it kind of forces you to sit still, put your feet up and maybe listen to some music or a podcast. Whatever puts you in a chill mood! I love how my skin feels after the mask is off- I’m like a brand new me. The best part is that they are very affordable. The ones I have were purchased at either Wal-Mart or Target for less than $5!
It’s a scientific fact that exercising increases our endorphins and “Endorphins make you happy. Happy people just don’t shoot their husbands, they just don’t.!” (Legally Blonde, anyone? J ). In all seriousness, doing something which benefits your body is a vital part of self-care. If you actually like exercise maybe you would want to do something more high impact like going to the gym and that would be relaxing for you. For me that’s more of a chore, although it does feel good when it’s over! What really makes me feel my best is walking. It’s free and I always come back with a more clear perspective of whatever I am facing. The long term health benefits associated with walking are decreased risk for cardiovascular disease, decreased stress, and more outlined in this article by Harvard Medical School.
We all have a lot of emotional weight and stress to carry throughout the day. Staying physically fit on its own won’t cure all of our problems. But if we feel physically weak that can translate into how we handle challenges that come our way.
Staying hydrated is a very self-care move that is just non-negotiable. There are countless health benefits to getting enough water in a day and that topic could be a blog post in its own. Sometimes regular water can be kind of bland. Something that I really like to do is infuse water with different fruits. Lemon is my favorite. But there are different blends that you can do, like strawberry and mint which I really want to try. This list from Culinary Hill has some awesome recipes
Listening to a Favorite Playlist
Music is very therapeutic to me. I can’t have a good day without music. It’s just not possible! I have fond memories of the days of mix tapes where I would wait for my favorite songs to come on the radio and record it to a cassette. Thankfully, technology has made things a lot easier. My favorite way to stream music these days is using Spotify, which has both a free and premium (paid) option. At the moment, I have the free option, which has ads, requires you to play in shuffle, and doesn’t allow you to play specific songs. I would say the paid option is definitely worth it if you can afford it because you can avoid all of those things. However, the free account works perfectly well. Below is my happy playlist, check it out and let me know what you think!
Setting aside time every week to set goals and check on your progress with your current ones is very necessary. It’s easy to get caught up in helping those around us that we forget to help ourselves. Do something today that your future self will thank you for. What is something that you have been putting off that God has told you to invest more time in? Maybe a hobby or skill that you’ve wanted to learn? A new business idea? Whatever it is, set aside some time in your week that is exclusively dedicated to your goals. I know I put off this blog for a long time. And I can’t help but think of the progress that I would have made if I would have started back when I was thinking and thinking about it! Be bold enough to go for it. There a lot of resources on the internet for goal setting or goal setting worksheets that you can find here and here
If you’re anything like me, I’m sure you have felt guilty about saying no in order to take time for your self. I have felt that by doing something for myself I was taking away from my friends and loved ones. The reality is that we need to take this time to fill up our own cup. We can’t keep pouring out because soon we will burn out and have nothing left to give. Sometimes we have to say no to others so that we can say yes to ourselves.
The most common is example is when you’re traveling on airplane and the flight attendant is giving the safety instructions. They always say to put your own oxygen mask on and THEN assist someone else with theirs. I encourage you to think about this analogy the next time you feel overwhelmed. Stop, put your own oxygen mask on and only then can you go on to care for those around you.
These are my tips and self care must haves, but I would love to hear from you! What are some things that recharge you and make you feel your best?
